Hardcoverpages. The teacher’s diary is not only a record of the suffering and hopes of a pretty average life, it’s also a kind of alien artifact from the vanished time before the war. Maybe its just human nature, we don’t really get peace.
But the book also goes a step further and considers self-created suffering as recounted in the teacher’s diary that loosely links the stories versus externally created suffering – someone doing something horrible to you – with the characters wondering which is worse and if one is more valid.
