I was once again swept into the epic life of Gergely, and the amazing battle grdonyi Eger… The first thing you notice is the cover: I liked that the author shows us an Ashura [a Muslim holyday] procession in Stamboul [Constantinople] in detail and writes out the musical notation of one of their songs.
Published September 12th by University-Press. This book is directed towards those interested in learning about Hungary, or those into thrilling adventures and can stand a slight lag in the action. I have always loved history, so this book called to me perfectly. The main historical events that are addressed are the bloodless occupation of Budathe seat of the Hungarian kings, inand the Siege of Eger now in Northern Hungary by the Turks that forms the major topic of the novel.
The brave soldiers decides they will fight till the end of their lifes. Story of a mischievous outspoken kid in a small Hungarian town.
It’s quite amazing really. Definitely not for everyone as it might be quite difficult to read due to historical terminology. I think I must have read it times between the ages of 13 and At first things seem a bit too coincidental, but after several chapters you will look forward to the “run-ins. This book is for history lovers! Gergely’s life story in the novel is almost fully invented, except for his role as an officer during the siege of Eger. I appreciated the map of the fortress, to which I referred while reading about the siege.

There is an ambiguity at the heart of this novel which leaves me uncomfortable, despite my strong sense of admiration for all the Hungarians I met on my csillagok in and Csiillagok the book had been about their lives, cool! He graduated at a college for teachers and worked for some years as a teacher and Catholic cantor. My grandson is currently living in Eger in his LDS missionary service and I wanted to learn more of the heritage of the Hungarian people.
I much preferred the scene near the end when a Turkish mother and a Hungarian mother are both reunited with their missing children, and their eyes – and hands – meet in acknowledgement of their shared sense of relief and humanity. The only gwrdonyi of “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon” available where I live is owned by the university library. I read it to my children when they were quite young, it left quite an impression on my son. Istvan Zoltan rated it liked it Jan 20, The story has not lost its magic over time.
